More About Asbestos Lung Cancer and What Causes Lung Cancer

May 12th, 2010 by MacStore

Studies show that there is an increase of cancer instances among workers exposed to asbestos. In lieu to this, asbestos lung cancer has become one of the most dreaded types of cancer.

The causes of lung cancer vary. Aside from exposure to asbestos, smoking and air pollution can trigger the onset of the disease. Therefore, avoiding these possible cancer-causing agents is essential for healthy lungs.

Asbestos is a group of minerals that are found naturally in the environment. These are featured as bundles of fibers that can be separated into durable and thin threads. These so-called fibers are resistant to fire, heat and chemicals. They don’t conduct electricity. For these reasons, many industries use asbestos.

Chemically, asbestos minerals are silicate compounds. They contain atoms of oxygen and silicon in their molecular structure. Asbestos are used in building and construction industries to strengthen cement and plastics; for insulation, sound absorption, fireproofing and roofing.

The shipbuilding industry also uses asbestos to insulate steam pipes, boilers and hot water pipes. These are also used in vehicle clutch pads and brake shoes. They are in paints, coatings and floor and ceiling tiles. Furthermore, asbestos has been found in some talc-containing crayons and vermiculite-containing garden products. For these reasons, there is no guarantee that anyone is safe from developing asbestos lung cancer.

With the wide use of asbestos, almost everybody can be exposed to its adverse effects. The most popular of which is cancer of the lung. Like any other form of cancers, the causes of this type can disrupt the balance on cell growth in the lungs – resulting to an uncontrolled division and proliferation of cells. Eventually, this will form a mass known as tumors.

Lung cancers are very life-threatening. In fact, they’re one of the most difficult diseases to treat. People with this condition don’t know they have it because the symptoms are often mistaken as that of tuberculosis ad other types respiratory tract infections. Some of the early symptoms of asbestos lung cancer include weight loss, chest pain, a persistent cough, chest pain, hoarseness and bloody or rust-colored sputum (spit or phlegm).

While the principal function of the lungs is to exchange gases between our blood and the air we breathe, the lungs are also responsible for the carbon dioxide to get out from the blood and for the oxygen to enter the bloodstream. Since asbestos fibers can stay for a long while in the lung tissue after an exposure to asbestos, people who have developed asbestos lung cancer have slim chances of surviving it.

The workplace is the most popular source of asbestos exposure since asbestos is used in insulations. Smokers and non-smokers exposed to asbestos are most likely to develop lung cancers than those who are not.

For doctors to diagnose the onset of the disease, a full physical examination is warranted. Your doctor may also take a sample of your phlegm (spit). This will be examined under a microscope to see if cancer cells are present.

To avoid cancer, you can start with a healthy diet. Eat citrus foods, green leafy vegetables, fresh garlic and omega-3 fatty foods such as fish, walnuts and winter squash. Avoid smoking and inhaling harsh chemicals that can harm the lungs like asbestos.

The Secret Language of Relationships (reissue)

The Secret Language of Relationships (reissue) The relationship bible – N. Tuncel – ATL, Ga, USA
I was first introduced to this book via a friend many years ago, and even then, I was hooked. I looked up the relationships I had at the time and they were pretty right on. I then saw the book again at a restaurant when my boyfriend and i were on a road trip in seattle. of course, i looked up our birthdays and i took it as an omen. that was 4 years ago, and we are now happily married with a child (not that i based my decisions on this book, but it was a kind of confirmation of the feelings i had at the time!). Currently, the book is on my bookshelf and now i refer to it occasionally. it’s great!
I recieved this book as a pass along gift from a person who just read the information on her immediate family and then thought the book of little use. I however have used this book for over 5 years, one of my ways to get to know a person is to ask their birthday and peoples birthdays they care about. The “kairos” that the book talks about in the starting chapter I see, because I ask, I have met more people born 3-10 of march and October than any other week. I have memorized all 48 weeks of this book and exercise it daily, I have cross referenced this book with the chinese horoscope to get a more definitive idea on a persons “innate orientation” as the book describes why people in a week act a certain way. Every eastern zodiac has a western equivalent ex: Rooster = virgo Dog = Libra. Its a 12 month and 12 year cycle so I am a Aquarius Rooster or Tiger Virgo. Beside reading and applying this book, I have studied on societies, body language, graphology (hand writing), intution, and conditioning (situation response). This book only confirms its self the more I use it, I meet alot of skeptics, mostly male, mostly close-minded, the interpretation is this is some sort of hocus pocus against religion. I think it is a demographic of human relationships, the technology of today records marriages, divorce rates, domestic disputes, driver infractions, the list goes on on the ways this world records who you are and what you do, this book utilizies that consistency of the human being to archive and study itself. Its all their in numbers astrology has moved on into a more understanding context from its days of star and planet alignment into using data from relationships – personology. : The Secret Language of Relationships shows how astrology can craft a relationship profile between any two individuals born during any two weeks of the year. The result is an indispensable guide to getting the most out of every relationship. The Secret Language of Relationships adopts the format of its bestselling predecessor, The Secret Language of Birthdays, and the compendious collection of combinations that follows proves the book’s assertion that “A relationship is a rather mysterious and amazing third entity, one that can come to lead an existence independent of the will or desire of its two partners…. in certain cases a relationship can prove far stronger than either individual, leading us to believe that a certain kind of synergy is at work.”

Well-organized, packed with fascinating “personality” information, and replete with snapshots (on every page) of famous couples–whether colleagues, spouses, or lovers–The Secret Language of Relationships is also simple to use. A glance at the two-page chart at the beginning of the book determines your birthday “period.” Next, find the period of the person who interests you–friend, parent, child, lover, or mate. The ensuing relationship dynamics are named colorfully and aptly: “Peas in a Pod,” “Uncommon Intimacy,” “Flexible Structures,” “Few Dull Moments,” and “Few Antipathies.”

Describing 1,176 possibilities, The Secret Language of Relationships sheds light on the classic questions–the hows and whys of chemistry in relationships. Is there a prime ingredient for love at first sight, a Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers of it all? An entertaining exploration of the very thing we cannot do without–each other–this wonderful volume explains why we feel the way we do about the people in our lives, and how–if necessary–to make it better. The Link Between Acid Reflux and Smoking

May 8th, 2010 by MacStore

If you smoke, or use any form of tobacco, improving your posture while you eat isn’t going to do much for your condition. Why? Smoking/nicotine is a direct contributing factor to acid reflux and to chronic heartburn caused by gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD). Therefore, engaging in any tobacco use – cigarettes, cigars, pipes, snuff and chewing tobacco – can not only become a literal pain in the chest, for GERD sufferers it can even disrupt sleep and interfere with your lifestyle.

The following are six ways in which smoking directly affects acid reflux:

1. Decrease in saliva production – Cigarette smoking inhibits saliva production, and eats up most of the bicarbonates within the saliva produce. Bicarbonates help neutralize stomach acid, and saliva works to coat the oesophagus to lessen the effects of acid that refluxes up from the stomach. Saliva also helps to wash acid in the oesophagus back to the stomach.

2. Increase in acidity – Nicotine encourages the production of stomach acid.

3. Bile salt movement – Smoking appears to encourage the movement of bile salts to the stomach from the intestines. Stomach acids are even more harmful when bile salts are present.

4. Direct injury to the oesophagus – Smoking can cause direct harm to the oesophagus by making it vulnerable to acid reflux injury.

5. Impair LES functioning – Nicotine can lower the pressure in the lower esophageal (LES) which can cause it to become weak and relaxed. LES is the valve that resides between the oesophagus and the stomach. The decrease in pressure can cause the LES to relax inappropriately, allowing stomach acids and enzymes to be thrust back into the oesophagus.

6. Decreased gastric motility – It has been discovered in studies that people who smoke have reduced gastric motility while they are smoking. A decrease in gastric movement can lead to poor digestion due to the fact that it takes a longer for the stomach to empty.

As you can see, there are plenty of reasons why smoking can cause and make acid reflux worse. That being said, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to you that the best treatment a tobacco user can do to help their condition is quit.

Of course, quitting smoking isn’t as easy as we think or would like it to be. An addiction to nicotine is a hard habit to kick, especially if you’ve been smoking for many years, hang around others who smoke, and enjoy it. However, smoking, like any addiction, can be overcome. The only trick is, in order to quit smoking, you have to want to.

There are many different quitting strategies you can consider. Therefore, if you find quitting through your own methods is difficult, consult your doctor for other options. Also, many people who want to quit smoking find support groups to be very helpful.

Does quitting smoking really help your heartburn?

It is believed by many medical practitioners that for most acid reflux sufferers, quitting smoking will likely allow them to get better fast. However, some practitioners believe that quitting smoking will only provide modest relief.

Nevertheless, all medical practitioners agree that quitting smoking is a good idea regardless if it helps your acid reflux or not. After all, even if you see little change in your experiences with heartburn, quitting smoking greatly reduces your chances of developing serious diseases such as cancer, heart and lung disease.

In addition, don’t forget that smoking isn’t the only cause of acid reflux. Thus, if you are not seeing improvement after quitting, it’s time for you to take a careful look at your diet.

Possibles Pouch

May 5th, 2010 by MacStore

The definition of what a “Possibles Pouch” is possibly, “Whatever you want to carry in it”.

In the early 1800’s this Possibles Pouch was just a flat rectangular bag with a flap which had to be carried under the arm or packed into the saddle bag. As things progressed Mountain Men or Fur Trappers fitted a strap so the bag could be carried over the shoulder. These bags would contain pipe tobacco, medicine and other essential items that these men may need to use on their outings into the wilds.

Various Possibles Pouches were created by the Native Indian Women for carrying a variety of items. These Possibles Pouches would come in several sizes and would be decorated in beads with a strap.

The Possibles Pouch has evolved into something which is quite different from the early days because now they come fitted with belt loops and are carried on the belt. Primarily these have been adopted by the Bushcraft Fraternity because of the need and requirement to carry extra items to aid their survival in the wilds.

Some of the items carried in the Possibles Pouch are First Aid Kit, Fire Making Kit, Cutting Tools and Cordage.

This list is endless and each person have their own specific items that they would carry in these Possibles Pouches. Normally these bags are constructed in leather either by Wet Forming or using the the Box Wall Construction method and are stitched together with Linen Thread for the more authentic look.

The use of Linen Thread does have it’s drawbacks as the stitching will rot in time especially if the Possibles Pouch constantly gets wet. Modern threads such as Tiger Thread are more widely used because this is a man made fibre and will not rot over time. Another material to use is Artificial Sinew which is made up of several strands and these are split down to be used to stitch the Possibles Pouch together and again this does not rot.

Closures for the Possibles Pouch again vary from toggles made from Antler or Buffalo Horn to Brass Sam Brown Studs through to Buckles or a simple leather Thong which passes through holes to keep the flap closed and the item inside dry.

Using Air Purifiers to Improve Indoor Air Quality

May 4th, 2010 by MacStore

Image : http://www.flickr.com

More and more people seem to be suffering from allergies in the West. It is uncertain precisely why people are becoming sensitized to everyday items, which only troubled a very small percentage of mankind for tens of thousands of years. Some people say it is because our world is so clean, so clinical, that our bodies have forgotten how to cope with a bit of dirt and others point to the increased amount of air pollution. So could air purifiers be the solution?

If you have an allergic reaction, the first thing to do is to work out which substance you are allergic to. This is not easy to do on your own, so you will almost certainly need some professional medical assistance. Or you could start by trying to eliminate dust from your house and see if that helps. You would start to do this by cleaning or replacing any filters you already have on the air conditioning and central heating and then turning the appropriate one on. Clean the vacuum cleaner’s filter too and replace the bag, if it has one. Then vacuum the house thoroughly from top to bottom.

If this does not work, you may be allergic to pollen, mold or tobacco smoke, if there is a smoker in the house, or maybe environmental pollution from cars or and near-by industry. Try fitting an electrostatic furnace filter and running your heating or cooling system 24 hours a day to see if that clears it up. The filters can eliminate 90% of household dust and some other allergens.

The majority of airborne mold particles can be removed from your air by the use of specialist air purifiers. These air purifiers usually raise the ozone levels too, which has the effect of eliminating smells and killing some bacteria. However, for a longterm answer, you will need to consult a professional to clear up the source of the mold, which is usually dampness caused by leaking pipes or damp brickwork, caused by a bridged cavity wall.

Second-hand tobacco smoke is unpleasant enough, but it can bring about an allergic reaction too. If this is the source of your problem, you could try one of the liquid air purifiers. This type of air purifier is very effective at its job. Some air purifiers purport to kill viruses too, but beware of such claims. The claim is usually based on the use of ultraviolet light, but any UV light producing less than 24,000 microwatts of UVGI is unlikely to be effective.

Unfortunately, there is no one total solution to the problem of air pollution, because there are so many sorts of particles that cause allergies. Carpets can be a major cause of allergens, as can all fabrics, especially if you own pets. Fleas, their larvae and house mites love carpets, curtains and upholstery, so you have to steam clean these at least once a year and spray them with a long-lasting insecticide containing permethrin or remove the carpets altogether and get leather furniture.

It is best to know which allergy you are fighting, but if you carry out the cleaning methods outlined above and use one of the ozone producing air purifiers, you will have gone a very long way to purifying the air in your home and defeating allergies.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with split air conditioning systems. If you are interested in Home Air Conditioning Systems, please click through to our site.
